How to choose a community
Visit, more than once
Walk the neighborhood, have a meal in the clubhouse or the dining room, and talk to the people who run it. Each community's own website is linked in its details.
Ask what the dues cover
A 55+ neighborhood's homeowners' association dues can cover the clubhouse, the pool, the grounds and more. Ask for the current dues, what they include, and how they have changed.
Ask about the age rules
Each 55+ community sets its own rules within federal law, which asks that most of its homes have a resident who is 55 or older. Ask about younger spouses, visiting family and renting a home out.
Homes for sale
Homes in 55+ neighborhoods are bought and sold like any other home. Ask Jen what is for sale in a community, or about selling your current home.
Prices are the communities' own
A price is shown only where a community's own website publishes it, with its words and the date it was checked. Prices change and often depend on the home or apartment: ask the community, or ask Jen.
Affordable senior apartments are HUD's
These are apartments for older adults in HUD's list of the senior housing it funds. Rent is set by income (usually about 30% of it), so HUD's figure is what residents pay on average. Who qualifies (age and income) depends on the program: ask the property about its waiting list.

Named beside every figureEach community's own website: what it says about itself (amenities, homes, prices, contracts, minimum age), quoted with the page and the date it was checked, and reviewed before it is shown. "Calls itself a life plan community" is the community's own description, not a state registration.
